Ivan Mauger 1939-2018

He was the most successful rider in the history of the sport and in a career spanning over 25 years the prolific New Zealander won a total of 15 World Championship gold medals including 6 in Individual Speedway, 3 Long Track, 4 Team Cup and 2 Pairs titles, creating a record which is unlikely to be surpassed.

A pioneer in many respects, Ivan brought to track racing a new level of professionalism, setting the pattern for the stars of today, and his dedication to winning dominated his career. Always willing to help young riders he was universally respected for his character on and off the track and one of his most treasured memories was being selected to carry the Olympic Torch at the Sydney Games in 2000.

He was inducted as a speedway legend at the FIM Gala in Estoril in 2010.

The FIM extends its deepest condolences to Ivan’s wife Raye and their family as well as his friends and colleagues around the world.
