FIM Mentoring Programme – Indonesia Circuit Racing Marshal Training project update

The FIM Academy’s Mentoring Programme includes a three-year project in Indonesia, which has the objective of training the future Clerk of the Course and Sector Chiefs, plus additional Race Control personnel and local marshals but also supporting the Federation Ikatan Motor Indonesia (IMI) to develop the education strategy and material for the future marshal training programs in the country.

Phase One of the project was held in early July. Managed by project Mentor Simon Maas, a CCR Member and FIM Steward from Australia, the IMI Senior Officials and local marshals from the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit in Lombok, received comprehensive training that combined classroom and practical in-field instruction in Circuit Racing marshalling skills and duties for events like MotoGP™ & WorldSBK™.

Conducted over three days, areas covered included track marshal response, flag marshal duties, radio communications, Sector Marshal command and Race Control management and included the use of trackside incident simulations with participants gaining knowledge and developing skills that can now be used to train new marshals at the Mandalika circuit.

The timing of Phase One was deliberate to ensure that these skills could be further reinforced at the Indonesian round of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship in August.

Phase Two was held immediately prior to round fifteen of the FIM MotoGP™ World Championship – the Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia – in mid-October and involved all local marshals.

Held over two days and focussed on entry level marshals, training was divided between a classroom setting involving presentation slides, video resources and demonstrations, and practical instruction on the track with the use of incident simulations, to practice in real-time the radio communications and trackside marshalling and flag marshal skills.

Further advance training was held inside Race Control with simulations held on Command and Control Radio Communications and Clerk of Course management.

The outcome of the first two phases of the mentoring programme has been a great success. The Senior marshals and trackside marshals were all well prepared for their duties during the MotoGP™ in Mandalika, and performed very well and in a professional manner with all situations during a busy Grand Prix. This performance by the marshals has witnessed an increased level of skill and knowledge of the marshals from past races.

The next phase will focus on the train the trainers concept, developing the experience of how to conduct effective marshals’ training and on the development of training material for the local recruits. Additionally, working to refine the newly created Senior Marshals systems and their performance.

Launched in 2023, the FIM Mentoring Programme provides a structure that allows Federations to learn from one another by sharing knowledge and experience to ensure the development of skills and encourage connection between Federations and increase engagement across the entire FIM Family.
