Berntzon makes Speedway GP comeback as Malilla Wild Card

Swedish champion Oliver Berntzon bids to end the season of his career so far on a high after being named as wild card for the Kaeser FIM Speedway GP of Sweden – Malilla on September 17.

Berntzon dons the famous No.16 race jacket for the penultimate round of the Speedway GP World Championship season, joining fellow countryman Fredrik Lindgren in the starting line-up.

The 29-year-old finished second in the 2020 FIM GP Challenge to qualify for the 2021 Speedway GP series, but he endured a difficult debut season on the sport’s biggest stage, finishing 15th with 32 points.

Berntzon has bounced back from that testing year in sensational style. He was crowned Swedish champion for the first time on June 28, before emerging as one of the stand-out stars of the FIM Speedway of Nations in July.

The Anderstorp-born rider raced to 20 points as Sweden won Semi-Final 2, before bagging another 20 in the FIM SON Final as his country won bronze – their first-ever medal in the competition. Berntzon’s 40-point haul over two meetings made him the tournament’s highest-scoring rider of all 15 nations.

Berntzon made it into the FIM GP Challenge in Glasgow on August 20, where the top three riders booked their place in the 2023 Speedway GP series. But he was denied his chance to compete after suffering a dislocated shoulder when he crashed during practice.

A big performance in Malilla will certainly boost Berntzon’s bid for a Speedway GP comeback.

He is joined in Sweden’s biggest speedway event by track reserves Victor Palovaara and Anton Karlsson, who line up at No.17 and No.18 respectively.
