Green Sports Day is commemorated on the 6th of October each year, since 2016, and is a worldwide celebration of the positive impact sports can have on people and the planet. The FIM today joins these celebrations as a member of the Sports for Nature.
This year this key day coincides with KiSS Motegi which celebrates the sustainability efforts that the organisers of the MotoGP™ in Japan have made by joining the FIM Sustainability programme under the name of ‘KiSS Motegi’.
2024 marks the third time that the Mobility Resort Motegi has organised KiSS Motegi, twice when they have hosted TrialGP in 2023 and earlier this year, and for the first time during their MotoGP™ event.
Amongst the activities organised during Motul Grand Prix of Japan are trees planting around the racing circuit in the grounds of Mobility Resort Motegi as part of their actions to offset CO2 emissions through forest conservation activities.
This activity, with the cooperation of the FIM and Dorna expresses the circuit’s commitment to be more sustainable through motorcycle sport and aims to foster the ‘Motegi Grand Prix Forest’ by continuing this activity every year.
The species of trees which are being planted are the White Oak, an evergreen tree with a high CO2 absorption rate, and the Zelkova, a deciduous broad-leaved tree that is the ‘Motegi Town Tree’.
Also, a group of twenty children from the surrounding area will participate in today’s pit lane walk and will make a five-minute speech about sustainable sports.
Other positive actions during KiSS Motegi will include waste management, surplus food collection, climate action, use of local products, and promotion of the local culture.
Kattia Juarez Dubon, FIM CID Director said: “We are delighted to celebrate this great event with Green Sports Alliance and Sport for Nature by presenting this KiSS event in Japan. MotoGP™ of Japan and KiSS Motegi reinforces a world class event aligned with the sustainability principles of Mobility Resort Motegi and MotoGP™ promoter Dorna through their #RacingForTheFuture programme. On behalf of the FIM I would like to thank all the people involved in making it possible for all the activities that have defined KiSS Motegi.”
